German MD Andreas Lecture on Medical Care and Health Care for the Elderly

For the first time since the COVID-19 epidemic, a medical and health care lecture was held at Fo Guang Shan in Frankfurt on March 17. Hosted by the Frankfurt Branch II of the International Buddha’s Light Association, the event invited Andreas Fürsch, a senior German medical doctor and expert in internal medicine and nephrology, who is also the new president of the second branch. The lecture titled “Lecture on Caring for the Elderly” explained and understood the phenomenon of aging to the public. Wang Jingxin, head of the Frankfurt Fo Guang Youth Group and White Elephant cadre, translated the Chinese into Chinese, and 40 people including Frankfurt Association President Liu Bo and Supervisor Yin Tailan listened.

Through exciting content, Dr. Andreas talks about “When does our body start to age?” the trouble caused. At the same time, we also mentioned some concerns and solutions for different symptoms.

Dr. Andreas talked about the differences between Chinese and Western cultures. Western women do not have the custom of confinement after giving birth, while Chinese women do confinement for nearly 6 weeks after giving birth. Medical survey reports show that women who are in confinement are much less likely to suffer from blood clots, urinary incontinence and other symptoms in the future or may be delayed for many years. 87-year-old Xu Jiayun said after the lecture that she was very happy and praised the lecture. Because she is feeling the pain caused by illness at an old age, she learned the relevant details through listening to the lecture and helped herself cope with the relevant situations in daily life. Hopefully there will be some prevention talks for young people in the future. Although German member Gerlinde Schärfer is familiar with Dr. Andreas, the content of this lecture helped her to deal with her daily life alone and to have more courage to face her physical condition.

From the lecture, Du Yanxiang realized the impact of changes in different organs of the body as we age. What impressed me the most was the information related to medicine and medical insurance. For example, sanitary products needed for symptoms such as urinary incontinence can be reimbursed through medical insurance, and we are more convinced that we do not need to be embarrassed to talk about the troubles caused by body changes. Instead, we feel that understanding them can make our lives safer and more confident.

Lan Meiling shared that if you find that you have hearing difficulties, you need to wear hearing aids to prevent ear deterioration. As we age, it is important to maintain mobility despite physical limitations. When we sit still for long periods of time, our bodies age. Stay healthy by actively participating in dojos, volunteering, etc. The most engaging part of her talk at the end was her demonstration of foot brushes and sock aids, devices that can make the lives of seniors easier.

Master Jueyan of the Fo Guang Shan Monastery in Frankfurt fully supports the holding of medical lectures. After several discussions in the second branch, Dr. Andreas Fürsch, the branch president, prepared and delivered a speech, hoping that Fo Guang people can use this to bring more knowledge to the elders to take care of themselves and their families.
